Movie Malarkey!

Welcome, one and all, to our first ever round of Movie Malarkey!

The aim of the game is thusly: an obscure and vague movie title will be selected. Without looking it up, two of us will attempt to guess what the movie is, based solely on the title, and the third will write up a synopsis of the actual movie. Your job, dear reader, is to guess which one is the REAL movie, and you shouldn’t be looking it up either. You can vote via poll or by comment. Anyone who wants to participate in the coming weeks can leave a comment. Same goes for anyone who’s go the perfect vague title.

This week the movie title is: Phffft! Our entries are:

a) When a washed-up Broadway actor’s girlfriend is kidnapped, her captors demand $3 million dollars in ransom. To raise the money, he must reassemble the cast of his hit musical Phffft!, including his volatile ex-wife and two men sharing a horse costume, in order to raise the money.

b) An acrimoniously divorced couple can’t seem to stop running into each other in various surprising ways while being counselled by their confidantes to keep their distance, until one night they find themselves in a nightclub doing the mambo together. Can a rekindling be far behind?

c) Roslyn and Kara were the two most popular girls in school, until the bus crash. Now Kara is in a coma, trapped in limbo, with the ability to move things with her mind and only  helping her friend from beyond will wake her up. But what will Kara do when Roslyn starts crushing on Kara’s boyfriend? Find out in the latest teen comedy from the writers of She’s All That.

ANSWER:

phffftAs many of you guessed, the answer is b) – the divorced couple who end up “doing the mambo.” Although I’d venture to say that if you guessed a) you are even more correct since that is clearly the superior movie synopsis, and one I wish existed. Phffft is a 1954 film starring Jack Lemmon. It gets its title, rather randomly I think, from Walter Winchell’s gossip column of the times. When a celebrity couple split, he called it a phffft. So there you have it.

I should have! That reminds me of a really gross commercial from the 90s (I’m completely relieved”. “That makes two of us”.) Sounds like you have a knack for coming up with fake movies.

I KNOW THIS MOVIE!!! I actually planned on watching this years ago when I went through my “ingest all things Jack Lemmon” stage. I never got around to it…but I know the general plot 😛

Because it that, I won’t expose my personal vote.

It’s probably psychologically factual that on a wider study we would usually go for the middle option regardless of the situation, whether it poses any relevance to the answer behind the option is surely completely random.

When putting multiple choice answers I often find that the last one is nonsense, then it’s just a lucky dip if you don’t know. Middle is usually a safe bet because putting the right answer first means people won’t read your funny ones further down if they know it.

Part factual, part blort. Did I win?

That’s awesome, Maura! Completely made it up. At least, I thought so. It would be really funny if it turns out it’s a thing. Thanks for playing.

voted B, cos you can’t sing phfffft and teenagers would never say it. At least not in Newcastle. 🙂 Seems more of a divorce noise to me anyhow 🙂 am sure I said phfft and several other similar words during mine 😀

So, you’ve inspired me to come up with a song and dance routine for phffft. I didn’t get very far though. There’s a lot of finger snapping. Having one divorce under my belt too, I think you may have a point though.

Like Andrew, I know this movie, so I won’t reveal my vote. If you’re a long-time fan of TCM (Turner Classic Movies), you may remember this, as it’s been on a time or two over the years.

A very fun idea. I’ve seen this movie! Won’t say which it is but oddly enough while I was reading your description this picture came too mind! It has to be one of the stupidest titles ever. I mean seriously who sits in a marketing meeting and says “Let’s call the movie Phffft!” and everybody including the studio head says “Great idea!” What does it even mean? As I said I watched the film and I still have no idea. I liked it but everyone in has made better ones.

Phffft has actually been kind of growing on me. It definately catches your attention. I wonder what people said when they bought their tickets.

Matt I would imagine there was a lot of cashiers who got a spray when people tried to say “Two for Phffft! please” My guess is that since she was a huge star at the time most people took the safer route of saying they wanted the new Judy Holliday movie.

Well I guess I came late to the movies? 😉 but I really enjoyed reading everything . So much so , I’m ready for my 2nd cuppa, I don’t remember drinking the 1st 😉
But j would have picked B as well , for 2 reasons.. I’m one of those people who pick from the middle on multiple choice ?. And it just sounded the most logical(). But I hope there will be more .
