The dinosaurs always win. That’s rule #1.

The dinosaurs will always kill the bad guys. That’s rule #2.

Genetically modified dinosaurs always have surprising extra powers because of the frog or lizard DNA that was used to create them . That’s rule #3.

Jurassic World follows the rules and feels comfortable because of it. I liked the first three and I liked this one too. It’s probably the second best movie in the series and it has a few nods to the first one (still the T-Rex of the franchise). Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are good individually and (spoiler alert) better together. I liked as well that BDH holds her own here. I read a lot about Mad Max’s “feminism” (meaning the women were not just damsels in distress) and must say it was so refreshing there when Tom Hardy handed over the gun. I felt that same breath of fresh air here. Bryce’s character was at least equal in importance and her actions save the day at least twice. We need more of that, a lot more. The helpless, screaming woman trope is a movie rule we need to see broken way more often. I hope this trend continues because strong female characters make a movie real.

All in all, this is a very successful return to Jurassic Park for everyone involved, except the members of the park’s security team. It earns a rating of eight (mostly) tame velociraptors out of ten. So if  there is anyone on Earth who hasn’t seen this yet, it’s worth a watch.

    “I liked as well that BDH holds her own here.”—Yes, me too. Just saw this today, and I really enjoyed it. Wish I could say the same about San Andreas which was so full of cliches and damsels in distress, it ruined the enjoyment of the movie for me. But Jurassic Park was lots of fun. Well, for the movie goers, anyway. Not for the park attendees…

    More rules:
    Rule #4: Butts will always be held onto in the presence of Samuel L. Jackson.
    Rule #5: Raptors will always prove their supreme intelligence.
    Rule #6: The T-Rex will always kick ass.
    Rule #7: British hunters will always be entrusted with capturing dinosaurs, yet will ultimately fail.

    Probably more than this. I tried.

      Good ones! I especially like the one about the raptors’ supreme intelligence. They are always way smarter than the bad guys and only spare the people who respect their intelligence.

      I’ve seen really mixed reviews and can’t understand why. This is a solid movie. Is it as good as the first? Absolutely not. But it’s a hell of a lot better than the other two and on its own it’s very fun (and very funny). It’s a textbook summer blockbuster and I don’t understand what else the people giving it a 1 star rating were expecting.

    I didn’t love it liked I loved the first, but the thing is, I was a kid when I saw the first. Remember the cups of water, how they jiggled and pooled and we knew something bad was coming? This one lacked that anticipation. It totally upped the teeth and blood and scary dinosaur bits, but it lacked the quiet dread. But there were quite a few kids in the audience, and it seemed like they certainly enjoyed their first exposure to the franchise. And I did too. Chris Pratt is a pretty good leading man – doesn’t take himself too seriously, which is a saving grace. There could have been a lot more eye rolling!!

    And about San Andreas – okay, yes, The Rock is the hero. But his daughter didn’t just wait around to be rescued. She got those two boys to safety. She knew how to make emergency phone calls, how to staunch blood, and where to seek shelter. I didn’t feel she was a damsel either. She may not have had a helicopter at her immediate disposal, but she kicked butt and stayed alive and kept others alive until they could get to her.

    So glad you mention how well Howard’s character was developed as more than just a damsel in distress! I liked the way she evolved over the course of the movie…you could see the person she was on the inside, hidden beneath a desire to succeed, which made her appear to be almost careless and bitchy…and then as she sees the ones she loves in real desperate danger, her true colors shine. Great performance, and great review!

    When my nephew was a kid, he was way too young to be watching Jurassic Park in my opinion but not in my sisters opinion. She used that particular movie as a babysitter a few too many times. I remember one summer evening we were going for a walk near sunset, and my nephew said to me that we had to get home before “dark time” because that was when the scary dinosaurs show up. He was four at the time. He is now at university, and no longer scared of dark time. 🙂

    How time flies! And how much the world misses Michael Crichton – I still read his books. I will see this movie at some point. I loved the original one, too. 🙂

    I enjoyed Jurassic World. I think it started out strong which helped me forgive the just okay parts later on. Seeing the park that is now open to the public for the first time was the first part in any of the sequels to remind me how I felt the first time I saw that brontosaurus in the first one.

    Really liked this movie though. Definitely the second best in the series.

      Yes, but those kids will never, ever actually die. Not even child extras died. It’s always adults who die, even though I’m pretty sure even dinosaurs know how to target the weak.

    I actually watched this the day before yesterday with my family, so I was interested to see what you thought of it. Personally, I enjoyed it. I also thought the leads had pretty good chemistry and were likeable. That’s important in a movie like this. For there to be any kind of excitement, you really have to care at least a little about whether or not the cast get eaten.
