I don’t know a lot of the movies! Room was a terrible book. Now that it’s been nominated for an award, that screenwriter should be recognized. Ha!

I loved the book until Jack escaped and they were rescued. After that, there was no goal. I thought it would have been better if after they escaped, we went into Ma’s POV then it might have been clarified. I had a really hard time with the baby talk for the entire book too. Just my opinion. Will I see the movie? Not in the theater.

I haven’t seen Spotlight yet, or The Revenant. I have high hopes for The Revenant. Of the ones I’ve seen, I probaby have to give it to Room. A small but terribly well made film, and deeply affecting. There’s a part of me that thinks it would be neat to see Mad Max win, but it won’t. Still cool that it got acknowledged.
Matt, you saw Spotlight. What are its chances?

It’s chances are fair. It’s gotten a lot of buzz since Venice and I think only Room could beat it. I personally didn’t love it as much as a lot of people did and would rather see Carol win.
I’m happy for Mad Max too.

I don’t know about The Big Short but I’m assuming the rest of those are done deals. I wouldn’t count out The Hateful Eight. Inside Out is another strong possibility. Maybe Creed. Brooklyn.

I’d say it can’t possibly. Trumbo, The Big Short, and Straight Outta Compton are super unlikely. Which leaves Beasts of No Nation and Spotlight, niehter of which I think will win (although both will probably get a nomination).

Yeah, I think usually Oscars tend to go for the stuff that’s released end of December, but maybe that dynamic is changing. I’m definitely stoked that Ex Machina is still remembered all this time later. It set the bar high for movies to come.

Thanks for weighing in, Keith. I liked Spotligh a lot but not as much as so many people seem to. I do question whether it has enough momentum to make it all the way to the Oscar finish line though. I agree with you though that, of the five SAG ensemble nominations, it has by far the best chance.

I saw Spotlight, I was really affected by it and I think voters will be too. I’d say that, The Martian and Room should be the frontrunners. The Revenant will win for Best Cinematography. Fassbender will outdo Dicaprio for the Best Actor and Saiorse Ronan will win Best Actress for Brooklyn

Again, I haven’t seen The Big Short or Joy, but feel confident that my vote will go to The Martian. So well executed and riveting to watch. It looked great, and the cast was great – but I see it didn’t earn an ensemble nod from SAG, so does that hurt its chances?

Comedy is a weird place for The Martian even though there were so many funny parts. With Spotlight, Room, and Carol some of this year’s favourites, they must have liked their chances better submitted as a comedy. I doubt I’m going to like anything better than The Martian for this category.

I think The Big Short will be good. And possibly also a weird comedy hybrid. But yeah, The Martian was exceptional. But can in compete agaist dramas at the Oscars?

I would say, in any of the major categories, The Martian is a long shot. It’s gotten great reviews with great audience reaction but I think Brooklyn, Room, Spotlight, Carol, and probaby The reverant all have much more momentum. I’m excited about The Big Short and, to a certain extent, Joy.

I thought so too. The Martian did perform very well at TIFF back in September and I wonder if it may have peaked a little too early as well. Then again, Room did even better at TIFF and is still a major contender.

Agreed. Although I’d say the humour was one of my favourite aspects of the book, and I did like Damon’s delivery.

I loved the Martian but I have to vote Spy here because (a) it was actually a comedy, and (b) it was funny all the way through and from all angles – Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne and especially Jason Statham killed it.

I’ve not actually seen any of these yet, but I imagine I’ll enjoy The Martian the most. Coincidentally, I was reading Empire magazine’s top 20 of the year earlier, which was published last week — The Martian’s at #7 and their summary includes the line, “while you wouldn’t call it a comedy”… Irony-tastic.

He deserves credit for keeping a story about typewriters and filing cabinets interesting but Spotlight is not what I’d call a director’s showcase. Miller and Scott may cancel each other out, I agree but they both did such great jobs. I haven’t seen The Reverant but for now I’m voting Haynes.

Brie Larson should get it. I think it’s hard to put Rooney Mara as supporting but she should go there. Like Jay said, since the movie is called “Carol”, you can’t put Cate Blanchett as supporting when she plays the title character. It’s not fair to have them competing for votes in the same category since both were excellent, so I’d rather have Rooney Mara as supporting so I can vote for something Carol-related.

Brian Cranston gets my vote for now but I am excited to see the Revenant to see if that holds. The comedy category is a tough one, I thought Damon, Pacino and Ruffalo were all excellent, but I think I’d give it to Damon, if nothing else because the Martian was my favourite of those movies and he’s a big reason why.

I haven’t seen Youth yet (in fact, I didn’t even know Jane Fonda was in it) or The Hateful Eight. I really like Vikander though and am pleasantly surprised that she even got nominated for Ex Machina. No, McAdams is a mystery. The only actor with any awards buzz for Spotlight was Michael keaton, who is curiously absent from both the SAG and GG nominations.

Alicia Vikander for Ex Machina – that movie was great! Would have loved to see Oscar Isaac get a nod for Ex Machina as well but I’m not sure who I would take out to do it. My SAG vote goes to Rooney Mara for Carol, though Vikander was great in The Danish Girl too!

I think it’s neat to see Tremblay up there because that kid is pivotal and it’s a make or break role. He definitely made it.

They only agreed on Michael Shannon and Mark Rylance, so I have to believe those are the strongest contenders.
I did love Mark Rylance, but it’s quite a small role.
I’m surprised Michael Shannon is considered only supporting. Does that seem right? I do love him.
I haven’t seen Beasts of No Nation yet but Elba probably shouldn’t be discounted.
Weird for Stallone to be supporting in his own damn movie, but there it is. I’m most comfortable just ignoring his being there.
Christian Bale is an interesting one since he was also posted as a lead elsewhere. Can’t wait to see this movie.

Michael shannon stands out for me, as much as I loved Rylance. He is clearly the supporting actor though. Andrew Garfield has the bigger part and we follow the story from his perspective. It’s an interesting mix.

I always back Tarantino to win screenplay if his films is nominated in other big categories, because tends to be that’s the only thing anyone’s prepared to give him. As it isn’t nominated for picture or director, though… I have no idea.

And Trumbo’s cast is great. Everyone seems to agree that Cranston AND Mirren deserve nods.

I feel like Trumbo was less of an ensemble. Everyone was so solid in it though but I would expect the Best Cast award to go to a cast where one actor is so front and center.

For sure. I keep forgetting about Stuhlbarg. He’s so good, both in Trumbo and Steve Jobs. And everything else!

Sorry,t hat wasn’t a sentence. I did think that there was a really solid cast to Trumbo, but I agree that it was really Cranston’s vehicle.

Straight Outta Compton for me, the three leads were especially good but Suge, Snoop and Pac were great as well. And I hated Paul Giamatti so he did his job too!

What’s she been in this year? Oh, well, Freeheld and Maggie’s Plan for starters. She was awesome as usual in Freeheld but I didn’t enjoy the movie.

I didn’t really love Still Alice either. In fact, I’d say Freeheld is better than Still Alice.

It’s hard to even comment because I feel like it’s been so long since I’d say I preferred Still Alice. I agree that it deserves recognition mostly for Moore’s performance but it still had a lot going for it. So much of it felt true where I found Freeheld mostly phony, apart from the acting that quite often elevated what I thought was a weak script.

Yeah, I get it. I just thought Still Alice felt very Hallmarky or Lifetime or something, aside from Moore’s performance, which was so raw and truthful, but I wasn’t sure the material deserved it, or her.

I just checked imdb and it looks like it will be. I enjoyed that one so much and was so impressed with all three lead performances and how they worked as an ensemble. Unfortunately, from what I can tell, a lot of people didn’t seem to like it as much as we did so I’m not sure Ray will be getting much action.

Have you seen that one yet? That’s a really good call actually. I had forgotten about it. I wouldn’t be surprised if it got Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Actress, and Supporting actor (Benicio Del Toro).

I haven’t seen enough of them to know. I’ve seen The Martian, Spy, Trainwreck, and Steve Jobs. What’s happened to me? I used to see every movie. But in my defense, many have not come my way yet.
I’m a little surprise by the Amy Schumer nod. I liked the movie, but she didn’t really knock my socks off as an actress.

Schumer’s was a break out role, but I don’t think we’ve seen her best.
Interestingly, Brie Larson was also very good in Trainwreck.

I’d be happy, but shocked. Count on it getting quite a few technical awards, but if any “crowd-pleaser” (For lack of a better term) is getting in, it’s probably Mad Max, I would guess.

I don’t think The Martian counts as a crowd-pleasing nomination. Yes, as far as I know, it was commercially successful but it is a very moving and satisfying movie in its own right.

It’s really hard to say how good this is going to be. A Best Picture nomination for a Star Wars movie is not unprecedented. Episode 4 was nominated.

I think Star Wars is the wild card this season — if it’s good enough (not even necessarily great, just good enough), I think it could sweep in all over the place. Surely all the technical categories are a lock, though (for nominations, at least).

Huh. It seems that the HFPA is slowly catching on to what the difference between a “comedy” and a “drama film with hints of comedy” is. Was not expecting Spy or Trainwreck, but I’m happily surprised. I’m disappointed that no actors from Spotlight were nominated, but Mad Max helps offset that disappointment.

I wish Ruffalo would’ve been a double nominee for Spotlight and Infinitely Polar Bear. I figured Trainwreck and Spy would be there. I didn’t realize Joy was being campaigned as a comedy. I would’ve liked IPB to get in there too.

I haven’t seen IPB yet but have a feeling I will like it. Probably more than Joy, which so far doesn’t seem to be very well reviewed. I was honestly underwhelmed by both Ruffalo and McAdams in Spotlight though. I thought Michael Keaton really stole that show.

There are a lot of the usual suspects this year, i.e. Leo, Fassbender, Redmayne. Happy to see Elba getting a SAG and GG noms, yay!! I’m the most bummed about Charlize not getting a nom for Fury Road, and none for Hardy even for Legend or The Revenant.

Wow, you guys have sure brightened up the place!! It looks great. I’m surprised that The Martian was in the comedy category. Really? I haven’t seen many of the movies, although I did see Mad Max and I enjoyed that one. I didn’t even know Room was out. I’m so lost. I’m kind of rooting for Sylvester Stallone and Lily Tomlin (because of your great reviews) even though I didn’t see the movies. That would be fun if they won!

Lily Tomlin has had such a career it would be enormously fun to see her get a win. And really, she makes the movie, she’s just so great and so fearless in it.

I have seen recently Joy, but The Martian, Train Wreck, Spy, Peanuts and Inside Out are favorites of mine. I did not like the children’s animated film, The Good Dinosaur. I really want to sew Carol and Grandma. I like Mark Ruffalo and hope to see The polar bear title movie and Spotlight. I like him in films where he gets deep into character. I forget the title of the murder one he was a newspaper reporter or a detective obsessed with the case. I like the idea of the Danish Girl and loved Eddie Redman in the Theory of Everything. I also just know Lily Tomlin would be good in Grandma.
My youngest liked the way Steve Carrell acted as his character in The Big Short. Lots more to see and not much time. . . Your opinions matter to me, your trio here of voices. Your TIFF posts were awesome and my favorites of 2015!:)
