Matt and I are super excited to present this year’s list of Oscar Nominees. I’m still recovering from back surgery but between a special little seat cushion and some good drugs, I think we’re down for some good discussion. Please join in the comments!
I thought Brie Larson looked beautiful in gold at The Golden Globes – kind of like an Oscar statuette. I know she’s down for a nomination today. Who else are we feeling good about?

Back when the Golden Globe and SAG nominations were announced, I never would have thought he’d be a serious contender but I was obviously wrong. This Oscar could very well be his.

I know, Matt. I’m as surprised as you are. But I know one Asshole who isn’t!

Well he was perfect in Creed and giving Sly the win feels right for a number of reasons: (a) Creed’s a great movie that’s not winning much else; (b) an Oscar for Creed would be a nice bookend to Rocky as a new generation starts; and (c) because everyone loves a good underdog story!

The truth is, she does really almost carry The Danish Girl. In fact, she IS the Danish Girl. But yeah, she was excellent in Ex Machina and that role was more demanding and more of a stand-out.

No Best Picture nod for Carol, maybe a bit of a surprise there.

I am surprised and even more surprised that Inside Out didn’t get a nomination. Carol and Room are my two favourites so I would have rathered see Carol take The Big Short’s nomination. And have The Hateful Eight take Spotlight’s spot.

I’m surprised about Carol being left out too but more surprised that Matt would give Inside Out a best picture nomination and not Anomalisa!

Yes, Carol did seem to be an easy awards darling.

Anomalisa was a much better movie than Inside Out but never really had a chance for a Best Picture nomination.

Matt, you’re right but it’s such a big oversight by the voters. Anomalisa was an amazing movie that HAD to be animated. It’s so good I think it needed to be in the running for the biggest award of the year.

Wow, Adam McKay is an Oscar-nominated director, folks!
Who saw that coming?

Not me. Back when we were discussing SAG and the Globes last month, I expressed doubts about it’s impact on Academy voters.

So, obviously I’m a big Carol supporter and am a little disappointed that Todd Haynes isn’t up there but I have to say I kind of get it with Adam McKay. The movie wasn’t perfect but he brought a lot of energy and creativity to a potentially boring and confusing story.

Since I’ve still seen so few of these films, I can’t say what I would take out, but I thought Ant-Man should’ve gotten some love in the technical categories.

Nothing for Ridley Scott either. I can live with that for sure.
Inarritu seems poised to take this again BUT I’m kind of hoping George Miller sneaks in and grabs this.

Jennifer Lawrence\Charlotte Rampling\Saoirse Ronan
I think it’s attrocious to see Jennifer Lawrence up there. It was a great year for women and I think she stole a spot from much more deserving performances. I would have definitely liked to see Lily Tomlin up there for Grandma.
I think Cate, Brie & Saoirse are all very strong and deserving but I think Brie has the edge and I’d love to see her take it home.
I can’t comment on Rampling since I haven’t seen 45 Years yet unfortunately.
I’m also a little skeptical about moving Rooney Mara into supporting category. I’d say they had almost equal screen time.

I haven’t seen Joy but share your frustration. JLaw is very talented but she shouldn’t be getting an automatic nomination every time she works with David O. Russell, especially since all I’ve heard is that Joy is his worst movie in a long time.

I thought the acting was pretty strong in Trumbo, but yeah, not the best way to tell a story I thought should be way more compelling.

It’s beyond me. Yes, Oscar seems to like Mark Ruffalo for some reason but how could they forget that just last year they liked Michael Keaton too? I would have been very happy with a supporting nod for Keaton. And I liked living in a world where Rachel McAdams had never been nominated for an Oscar.
And Steve Carrell! I would take back every Big Short nomination just for an acting nom for Steve Carrell.

If this was my race, it’d be between Hardy and Rylance. Christian Bale just wasn’t a stand-out in this movie to me, and the same goes for Ruffalo. I can’t count out Sly, though I’d like to. To me, he’s just not acting. He’s just being himself. He may or may not even know they’re making a movie.

Yeah. I’m pleased in both cases. Bridge of Spies is benefiting a bit from the Academy’s stubborn love of Spielberg (both Munich and War Horse got more attention from Oscar than anywhere else). With Sicario, I really don’t know what that’s about but good for them. It’s a tightly edited, very tense thriller.

Actress in a Supporting Role: Alicia Vikander\Rachel McAdams\Jennifer Jason Leigh\Rooney Mara\Kate Winslet
Will this possibly be a Kate & Leo repeat?
McAdams doesn’t figure for me.
Vikander was definitely solid. I kind of question the supporting part of this for her though. She figured largely, and at times it even felt like her story. She could take it.
Leigh…well, I preferred her in Anomalisa. That was cool. I think I’m still decompressing The Hateful Eight. But no, I don’t see this as a win for her.
Mara might be Kate’s biggest competition. She was really good, and again, I’d even question placing her in the supporting category. She did a lot of heavy lifting.
LikeLike
These supporting categories are always a mixed bag. Sometimes they only have a few scenes but make a strong impression. Others are practically a second star, like with Mara (or Jake Gylenhaal in Brokeback Mountain, Jamie Foxx in Colatteral). It makes it hard to compare.
Jennifer Jason Leigh had a great part in The Hateful Eight but I agree completely that she won’t win.
For now, I’m voting Rooney Mara but i don’t think she’ll beat Kate Winslet, whose momentum seems so much stronger than that of the film itself.
And Kate and Leo winning Oscars on the same night. How cute would that be.

I loved Ex Machina and would love to see this win.

Brie Larson is brilliant–first noticed her going toe-to-toe with Toni Colette in United States of Tara (that takes acting chops!) and Saoirse Ronan is terrific in Brooklyn, too. Haven’t seen enough of the male or supporting acting nominees to decide yet. Leaning toward Tom McCarthy for Best Director. Writing: Brooklyn or Room (Adapted) and Inside Out (Original). Best Animated: Inside Out (it melted my heart), though Shaun the Sheep was adorably silly (as are all pretty much all Aardman movies and shorts). Best Action (if it was a category, as it ought to be): Mad Max. Best Sci-Fi: The Force Awakens (come on, Hollywood, where’s the love?).
