captain-america-civil-war-teamSpider-Man. Ant-Man. Falcon. Black Panther. These are the top four characters, in order, in Captain America: Civil War. You might think it’s a bad sign that neither Captain America nor Iron Man is on that list, but you’d be wrong!  Although you would be right in thinking I wish this had been a Spider-Man movie with a Captain America/Iron Man cameo, rather than the other way around.

The downside to all of this is we’ve seen it all before. Not only in the sense that it’s roughly the six hundredth comic book movie that came out this year, but also because DC’s eulogy to the millions of fictional civilians killed every year by superheroes came out just six weeks ago.

One big difference between the two movies: Marvel’s is far better. Though like Batman v. Superman, Civil War is too long.  With that said, I’m willing to forgive Marvel since that extra run time was used to shoehorn in Spider-Man. Who, as mentioned at the start, was AWESOME.

Another big difference: Marvel’s movie is way funnier. Civil War would have won by default anyway since there were no laughs at all in BvS, but Civil War is legitimately funny in between the dead family member melodrama.

But as with BvS, don’t expect anything new, don’t expect a good villain, and don’t expect the story to make any goddamned sense. Really, the only differences between the two movies are that (a) we’re glad to see/meet Marvel’s supporting heroes while DC’s just felt like filler; and (b) most of Marvel’s heroes are eager to make us laugh even while fighting, which is a welcome change from DC’s rainy night fights between surly mumbling demigods. Spider-Man is the perfect example of Marvel’s success in both categories, and that’s enough to make this movie worth watching.

Mostly, that’s because Spidey is the best superhero ever and I’m pumped he’s back in the MCU, where he belongs. Though I am suffering from chronic end-credit-scene-fatigue, as a Spider-Man fan I’m glad I stuck around ’til the very end. Hint, hint.

    I really hope to see this film in the weekend. Why? 2 words: Spider-Man. I saw those clips and I like him even more than the other 2 guys that played him.

      Sounds like we will have to wait for Thor 3 (a 2017 release) to see those two again, but it will undoubtedly be worth it – it’s being directed by Taika Waititi (who we love) and is described by Mark Ruffalo as a buddy road trip movie.

      In my review was going to rant about BvS getting unfairly picked on by critics but couldn’t put the thoughts together. Civil War is better but really, the movies are not all that different and share a lot of the same flaws.

        I enjoyed BvS. It IS too long but it entertained me, and Batman and Wonder Woman were both great. Superman I didn’t like as much but I think that’s mainly due to my personal preference for the sunny boy scout superman I grew up with rather than the more modern overwrought god. Basically, if you’re a fan of those three characters then I think it’s worth watching.

        I definitely thought Civil War was the better movie and this coming from a guy who much prefers DC characters. The two movies had some significant overlap in terms of plot but Civil War had a much clearer idea of the story that they wanted to tell. To me, this- not any of The Avengers movies_ was the big payoff for 8 years of Marvel movies.

        She’s the best. Marvel is falling short with female heroes based on Wonder Woman alone. Captain Marvel can’t come soon enough.

    This is on our movie list for this weekend. Thanks for the hint about sticking to the end of the credits. I usually do so, but now I will for sure. Even if my bladder is about to burst after 2 1/2 hours and a gigantic size diet soda.

      American drink sizes are mind-blowing. I always assume we’re getting the same portions as our southern neighbours, but when I got a large drink at Tribeca I was shocked at how big it was and it must have weighed at least ten pounds.

      I wish they’d stop. I don’t want to watch the credits but now I feel I have to stay til the very, very end. And even worse, sometimes I do and then nothing happens, like at BvS.

    I am confused-why are the 2 fighting? I mean…Iron Man and Capt. America??? I guess I should know but I don’t even though I am looking forward to seeing this.

      Basically, in the movie they are fighting over whether or not the Avengers should be controlled by a U.N. committee. Iron Man says “yes because too many civilians have died as a result of the Avengers’ fights” and Captain America says “no and I’ll punch anyone who tries to make me take orders”.

      Because every time they do their thing, they damage buildings and cities at best, and cost civilians their lives at worst, so now the world wants to put sanctions on them. Iron Man thinks this is a sacrifice worth agreeing to in order to keep working together and wants to sign the Accord, but Captain American is worried they’ll be giving up too much control over what they do so won’t sign, which puts him on the wrong side of the law.

    Lol, why have it called Captain America movie then? Doesn’t Spiderman have enough popularity to have it be its own movie? (Although I thought the Spiderman movie franchise was awful and sappy and corny and the actors were pansies. Sorry.)

    It’s nice to see funny in these movies. That’s why I liked Ant-Man, I was surprised at the humor. (I think Paul Rudd is awesome, too.) Superman is just a dreary depressing boring movie. The first two Batmans from Christopher Nolan had the right mix of drama and darkness. Seems DC hasn’t gotten their formula right yet.

    So now I will watch this movie when it comes to “video”. (I miss saying that. I don’t care if using DVDs makes me old fashioned. I know I’m not cool. But I like referring to movies gone from the theater as coming soon to video. 😉 )

    Looking forward to seeing this one. I was chatting with a friend yesterday about how much I enjoy these movies – essentially Marvel perfecting a winning formula with the characters, chemistry, and the sheer amount of fun they have. I haven’t seen BvS, but Man of Steel took itself way too seriously. None of these flicks do that at all.

    Sometimes I think if viewers can come out of the theater feeling like they whooped someone’s ass the movie is bound to be a success. What we seek is to feel stronger because so many of us feel so damn helpless these days.Even if it IS for just the rest of the evening!

    I have not seen BvS but did like Captain America versus Iron Man. I just saw it with my oldest daughter and her two sons, ages 11 and 7. They weren’t the least bit phased (fazed) by the violence, by the way. I felt there were nice tie-ins to Agent Carter on TV, as well as past Avengers movies. Being from Cleveland and analyzing scenes for our location shots, I was tickled to see they labeled them. The Opera house in a previous movie was actually downtown Cleveland theater house. In past, they filmed also on our highways, underpasses and Public Square.
    Side note: One small “bragging rights” from the first Hulk in Avengers movie was the big glass room they put Hulk in, was filmed in Sandusky, Ohio. The Plum Brook NASA location was where my Dad and a group of nuclear engineers set up a nuclear reactor based on the old Oak Ridge location (Tennessee). The anti-gravity room was one used by Ohio astronaut John Glenn in Sandusky. If you are ever watching you will see the NASA banner in the Avengers movie. 🙂

      That’s interesting. I’ll have to re-watch. We’ve been to Cleveland but aside from Jacobs/Progressive Field I would not be able to pick out the city without some help, so yours is appreciated!
