The 2017 awards season heats up as the SAG awards declare its winners.
Outstanding performance by a cast was won by Hidden Figures, edging out fellow nominees Captain Fantastic, Fences, Moonlight, and Manchester By the Sea, which was the most-nominated movie at the SAG awards but won absolutely nothing.
Denzel Washington took home his first SAG award for his work in Fences, which means Casey Affleck for Manchester By The Sea got shut out, as well as Andrew Garfield for Hacksaw Ridge, Ryan Gosling for La La Land, and Viggo Mortensen for Captain Fantastic. This is a rare exception in the Casey Affleck train. Do you think it’s likely to be repeated?
Emma Stone’s performance in La La Land topped Amy Adams for Arrival, Emily Blunt for The Girl on the Train, Natalie Portman for Jackie and Meryl Streep for Florence Foster Jenkins. This makes her the frontrunner for the Oscar, with Isabelle Huppert and Natalie Portman possible upsets.
Viola Davis won for supporting actress for Fences over Naomie Harris for Moonlight, Nicole Kidman for Lion, Octavia Spencer for Hidden Figures, and Michelle Williams for Manchester By The Sea. She’ll be pretty unstoppable come Oscar time. I applaud her bold performance even though I radically disagree with her presence in the supporting category at all.
Mahershala Ali took the supporting actor trophy for Moonlight, besting Jeff Bridges for Hell or High Water, Hugh Grant for Florence Foster Jenkins, Lucas Hedges for Manchester By The Sea, and Dev Patel for Lion. This is the right move and I hope it repeats itself.
Hacksaw Ridge won outstanding performance by a stunt ensemble in a motion picture over fellow nominees Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Jason Bourne, and Nocturnal Animals.
Lily Tomlin received the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Dolly Parton and Jane Fonda. Amid the many political speeches of the night, including digs against Donald Trump and his insane ban on Muslims, Tomlin quipped What sign should I make for the next march?
So, what do you think? Best dressed? Biggest upset? How did it stack up to your expectations and how will it affect your Oscar pool?
Emma Stone is best-dressed w/ Evan in second for best suit. Plus, who the fuck invited Ashton Kutcher to the festivities when he’s not really an actor?

Those are some of the ugliest, tackiest dresses. My word, I can’t even think what was going through their minds when they picked those things out. I’m over the hype for LaLa Land. Thrilled for Viola, she’s amazing.

I am boycotting any award event that hasn’t got Deadpool nominated. 🙂

Best dressed? I don’t think Amy Adams can do anything wrong. Love her!
Worst? I just don’t know what Natalie Portman is wearing even though I love her too.
Upsets and Oscar pool? I need to catch up on some damn movies so I can have an informed opinion!

Yes, what Natalie Portman is wearing is tragic. She’s always pregnant for her big award moments, but that’s no excuse. There are lots of attractive ways to dress a pregnant body and that’s not even close.

As good as being in the audience, and I didn’t have to buy a gown.

It’s really nice to see Lily Tomlin get the Lifetime Achievement Award, and to see that her wit is still sharp as ever. I don’t want to downplay or ignore what other groups are going through but the gains made by LGBT people in just the past few years are already under threat, and we need both her sense of history and her sense of humor.

Old white guys are the majority of the Academy which has made for some interesting patterns over the years. For example giving Meryl Streep her third win just because they love her and giving a lot of young actresses Best Actress for a significant role. Emma Stone fits that category so I’d say the SAG win makes her the frontrunner now. She’s a star, entering her 30s, she didn’t make herself ugly (Oscar members love that) but she did sing and dance which counts for something. Let’s not forget that it’s also a fairly subtle performance emotionally that conveys a great deal with little. I’m interested to see the other performances and I think if Davis was nominated as Best Actress I’d argue Stone winning would be an upset but as it is I think she’s going to win and that’s okay, maybe even good. If Denzel Washington wins his second Best Actor and third Oscar I got no problem with that. He should join that elite club. He’s already there in our hearts. Viola winning would be neat too although I agree isn’t she the female lead in Fences? Finally Ali is a lock for me. If Affleck or Huppert or Portman win instead I’m fine with that too, Huppert especially.
