lead_720_405Aside from the awkward colon in the title, the most annoying thing about the Mission: Impossible series has always been Tom Cruise’s massive over-reliance on rubber masks (yes, even moreso than his ridiculous excessive arm-pumping while running). While Mission: Impossible – Fallout doesn’t totally avoid the rubber mask cliché, it tweaks it enough to feel fresh. And every once in a while, despite how familiar the M:I formula has become after six attempts, the movie will sneak one by you, winking as it does.

In Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team (Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg) are tasked with saving the world (again) by recovering a bunch of stolen plutonium before a terrorist group can use it in nuclear weapons. The stakes are high so Ethan and his crew need to be at the top of their game, and doubly so when we’ve seen them in action so many times already.

M:I-F is up to the challenge in all respects. This is the best entry in the franchise so far. Not because it does anything surprising or anything we haven’t seen before, but because it delivers exactly what it promises and because it’s flawlessly executed, without a single misstep.

Action-packed and entertaining from start to finish, M:I-F is better than I expected, better than it has any right to be, and better than it ever needed to be.  This is 2018’s best summer blockbuster, hands down.

    Ever since I first saw the trailer for this one, I have been really looking forward to it. So far the film seems to have gotten only positive reviews, which makes me even more excited for it. Glad to see you enjoyed it as well and the fact that you name this 2018’s best summer blockbuster is causing me to really want to see this now. Oh well, I guess I can still wait two more weeks 😊

    I saw it yesterday. I loved it like I do all MI films, but I thought it was too heavy on the action and chase scenes. Yes, that’s what the films are known for, but it came at the cost of less banter between the characters, and I really enjoyed that in the last film.

    I’m glad you found a movie you finally liked! Haha. I agree with the ridiculous arm-pumping though. I’d love to go on a jog with Tom Cruise someday and see how much stamina he really has.

    Probably not my favourite M:I film on balance (I love all of them, even M:I-2, so there’s tough competition), but the stunt work here really is something else. I haven’t bothered to see a film twice on the big screen in almost a decade, but I think Fallout may merit a return visit.

      They must not have used that shot because I think I would have remembered it from the film! But there were lots of choppers heading toward cliffs and other choppers so that probably makes up for it.

      At this point the rubber masks are kind of comforting to me. They are such a nice, easy way to solve cases and identify moles! I don’t know why they’re more widely used. Maybe next time, though, we will finally see Cruise use the Face-Off machine.

    I’m in full agreement it is the best summer blockbuster of the year. It really is a treat. I’m not sure I’m with you that it is the best in the series, I think III still is a touch better but it is close for me.

    I know we probably only have a couple more M:I films with Cruise left (although he doesn’t look anywhere near 56 years old in this movie) but I’m going to savor them while they still are happening because its going to be a huge void when he finally slows his crazy train.

    I think the bathroom fist fight is alone worth the price of admission. So nice to be able to see the action scenes instead of all that fast cutting nonsense. The motorcycle chase through Paris was my second favorite bit. (Louisa)

    Loooved seeing this on the big screen. Tom Cruise annoys me in “real life” but his cinematic performances are incredible. Breaks his foot jumping across buildings and carries on through the scene.

      Yeah Tom Cruise as a person is not someone I would ever want to spend time with, but he certainly goes all out for these movies. And then annoyingly is not shy to brag about it in the promo material.

      I think there is more than one viable choice but for me, this one stood out. Though I guess we will see whether that is still the case when #7 comes out, because 1-5 are pretty mushed together in my head.

    I did enjoy the movie but sometimes I feel like, mentally I don’t enjoy a movie that actually deep down I believe is good. What I mean by that is with all the promotion the actors do and the trailers, I feel like they raise your expectations SO much that even a good move which deserves a 8 or 9 out of 10, you then give a 6. I don’t know if I’m explaining it the way I mean to but I do believe this was a good movie probably because I didn’t see any trailers or anything so I went in with an open mind. It was a good 8.

      That’s true for me as well – high expectations going in can lead to feeling disappointed with a movie even if objectively it was pretty good. But it’s hard to avoid the trailers!
