Honourary Assholes

Dear fellow assholes, friends of assholes, and very nice people who are just visiting by accident,

You may have noticed that we Assholes Who Watch Movies have technological know-how that extends to a DVD remote control and not much else. We aren’t super great at this interneting thing, so first off, thank you all for your kindness and patience.  Thank you to everyone who has Liked us or Followed us first – I guarantee that we’ll always follow back (eventually, when the notification makes itself obvious), but most days locating a button is well beyond our capabilities. So to those of you daredevils who made the first move – un gros merci beaucoup.

And to all of you who visit and leave comments, please know that we do our best to respond in kind. We love hearing from you but we also love learning from you. It is a pleasure to get to know you, please don’t be shy, jump into the discussions, we always love to hear from you.

Here is a partial list to recognize those of you who come and comment and share a story – assembled stupidly, the only way we know how. We dub you Honourary Assholes, a dubious honour, though the highest one we know.

There is nothing that makes me happier than this!!!!

Well – blackened filet and shrimp cocktail might. A GOOD filet. And maybe some Scotch. Come back to OKC and let’s all hang out! I know some good places to eat – I won’t get drunk and handsy. Maybe.

Oh my, not only am I an “Honourary Asshole”, but you guys have also given my book a wonderful plug! What an unexpected and fantastic way to start my workday. Thank you so much! And I appreciate you spreading the word on Twitter too. Keep this up, and no one will be able to call you arseholes anymore. 😉

I always enjoy stopping by your site. I love books, but I also love movies, and you guys are opening my eyes to some I might not otherwise have taken notice of. So thank YOU for that.

Have a good one and thanks again!

This is my second trip to join up with the assholes. I use that term in this context as one of respect. I come because over the last few years, it has bothered me greatly that one Jessica Chastain did not win the Oscar for her portrayal of Maya in ZERO DARK THIRTY. This movie was not only incredible recent history, it also featured many high grade performances by several actors. None more amazing than Ms. Chastain’s driven, obsessed, and single minded Maya. She threw herself into this character to show all what a person can achieve when the effort toward a goal is so intense, it cannot help but succeed. A lesson to be achieved by some, but not all. This is true to be sure. But, I feel that her portrayal of Maya deserved all of the plaudits possible, including that Academy Award. I have to be honest, I did not see Jennifer Lawrence’s Oscar winning performance in Silver Linings Playbook that year. My impression of the failure of the Oscar to go to the correct actor may have been tinged by political considerations with regards to the waterboarding and other enhanced interrogation methods brought forth by Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal in their production. Whether one thought they were morally wrong, or very necessary, they should not have had a derisive effect on Jessica Chastain’s credit for her sterling performance. Of course, I have no proof or any kind of documentation that would back me up on the above notions that I brought forth. However I cannot help but think this could have been the case in these politically charged times. My final hope is that over time Ms. Chastain’s great performance in this equally great movie will become to be recognized for what it is: one of the all time best.
