So this is what “straight to video” looks like in the Netflix age. Honestly, I am surprised at the drastic drop off in quality from 10 Cloverfield Lane to The Cloverfield Paradox, if only because I gave 10 Cloverfield Lane a 3 out of 10 and by comparison to Paradox, Cloverfield Lane is a masterpiece.
Basically, The Cloverfield Paradox is a less entertaining, less scary, and less interesting version of Event Horizon, a movie that really let me down 20 ye
ars ago, and that I am sure has not improved over time. That The Cloverfield Paradox falls so far short of that (very) (very) (very) low bar is damning indeed.
For a “franchise” that I didn’t much care for in the first place, Cloverfield has managed to sink to new depths of awfulness with each new entry, especially with the two “sequels”, which were clearly written as standalone movies, then got stamped with just enough giant monsterness to justify the Cloverfield name.
At least at this point we can be fairly sure we’ve reached the end of this disappointing series. It is a sad state of affairs that I can’t totally exclude a reboot in five or ten years, but that’s a rant for another day (and one I’ve probably already written out three or four times in other reviews so I’m sure you can find it without too much effort!).

That’s disappointing … reassessing my idea to reassess my thought about rewatching the other movies. 🙂

Oops. I kind of liked this one. But film-buff son only gave it a 5 out of 10, which I’m sure doesn’t surprise you. And he said he was being generous. 😁

This movie was once upon a time called the God Particle. It wasn’t great, and the studio was worried about it losing money. So they repackaged it. They cut it, added the monster, and started calling it part of the Cloverfield canon. But it wasn’t written or filmed to be that way. That was after the fact. And it was also frustrating to have the mystery in the other movies just get retro-explained. I’ve heard it likened to mitochondrians, which I am probably spelling wrong.
I thought it was tragic what a waste they made of a very talented cast.

It’s really obvious that all the Cloverfield stuff was shoehorned in with reshoots, too. But even if it hadn’t been, the underlying ‘original’ movie is so nonsensically terrible. As Jay said, it’s also a waste of a very good cast, which is just rubbing salt in the wound.

as may be common knowledge by now, cloverfield blvd (named after the old Clover Field) is the exit J J Abrams takes off the freeway to go to his office, hence the name of the franchise. since i lived a block away on 22nd street (this is in Pico), i have a special fondness for the franchise. let’s hope they raise their game!

Wasn’t overly impressed by the original, didn’t see the second and won’t see this either. I also won’t see Cloverfield 4-Overlord set in WW2 and due for release in October, but will look forward to your review of it!

Not the end. They are evidently working on a fourth (with a project name of Overlord).
I don’t dislike the series, although I don’t love it, and actually like the anthology approach with just loose ties to each other. I found this one to be mediocre at its best and tonally inconsistent throughout.

The story behind its “release” sounds to me like a better view than the film. I saw on Variety’s web site a few months ago they kicked the release date for this film forward a bit and it was expected for a theatrical release in the spring, still operating under the working title “God Particle.” Guess they wanted to keep the “suspense” it was part of the Cloverfield family. Then, I see the studio is shopping it around. Next thing I know I’m watching the Super Bowl and up comes a trailer saying it is available for viewing online immediately after the game. Now we know why. A classic example of a studio cutting their losses.
