In 2006, Disney purchased Pixar for the equivalent of $7.4 billion dollars. It’s becoming more and more clear how good a deal that was for Disney. Every Disney animated movie since has been amazing, from Wreck-It-Ralph to Frozen to Big Hero 6.
Not only is Zootopia another success for Disney, it may be the best of the bunch since John Lasseter and Pixar came on board, and that’s probably the best endorsement I can give.
The best part of Disney Animation’s renaissance is that these movies aren’t just for kids. They’re as enjoyable for adults as for little ones. Zootopia, for example, includes a spot-on reference to Breaking Bad! Striking that balance must be incredibly hard but Disney has picked up the torch from Pixar in that area and is doing it as well as Pixar ever did. Zootopia is literally a movie that all ages will enjoy. So it’s one up on LEGO!
Most importantly, Zootopia’s underlying message is timely and may be more important for adults than kids at this point, given the horror that is the U.S. Republican party’s nomination process. We as Canadians dealt with some of the same terribleness in our recent election so it’s not just an American tactic. Fortunately, enough of us were able to reject fear and demonization of minority groups to choose someone who wants to bring us together instead of tearing us apart. We really, really, really want to believe American voters will do the same (just like they’ve done in the last two presidential elections). Please don’t let us down!
As for Zootopia, it is a movie that will definitely not let you down. It’s smart, funny and deep and you should totally see it. I give Zootopia a score of ten sly rabbits out of ten.
I totally agree!!! It was great and it tackled so many real life struggles both political and personal. I actually cried at three points of the movie.

I even wrote a review because I wanted people to know that it was not just a kids movie!!

It’s absolutely not just a kids movie. I thought it was right up there with the Lego Movie as far as being a ton of fun no matter what age you are, and it does a good job of making real-world issues understandable to kids without oversimplifying them.

Great review 🙂 I have not seen this yet, but as for your Disney/Pixar comments, you might be surprised to learn that aside from The Toy Story movies, the only Pixar film I actually love is last year’s Inside Out which I though was great 🙂 As for today’s animation, I love anything from the directors of The Triplets of Belleville and other foreign ones like Persepolis and Waltz with Bashir and Sita Sings the Blues. As for American ones, I love Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Lego Movie 🙂 I love Anime, (Miyazaki is one of the greatest) and speaking of Anime, have you ever seen 1988’s Akira, which is an adult-oriented anime? It is basically an apocalyptic entry that focuses on telekinesis 🙂 Unless you have not seen it, you will be blown away when you do because that is how I felt watching it 🙂 Anyway, keep up the great work as always 🙂

I am a bit surprised to learn that Inside Out and the Toy Story movies are the only Pixar movies you love. But hopefully you still enjoyed their other stuff, like Up and the Incredibles. I haven’t seen the foreign animated films you named but the American ones you listed are some of my favourites.
And as a comic-book geek I am ashamed to admit I have not seen Akira or read the manga. I’ve heard great things though and one of these days I’ll get around to it!

I’ve heard all sorts of great things about Zootopia. And I, too, hope my fellow American voters aren’t stupid enough to be pulled in by that idiot that’s really starting to scare me. But there are quite a few idiots in this country, so I worry.

There are quite a few idiots everywhere. In our last election it turned out that the idiots on the hate train were not all that numerous, they were just really, really loud. Hopefully that’s the case in the U.S. as well.

I have so much love for this movie – sloths for the win!! Cried with laughter in so many scenes.

The sloths are the absolute best. That’s another adult-oriented part that is awesome because everyone finds something funny in that scene. And the ending scene is just the best thing ever.

I’m still waiting for this to be released in the UK (and it’s called Zootropolis here which is weird) but I can’t wait. I haven’t read a bad review yet and I want to hear this Breaking Bad reference, ha!

That is always strange when it’s a different name from country to country. It’s such a great movie! The Breaking Bad scene is not a huge part of the movie but it’s a fun little nod.

That IS a weird title change!

Yes, I think this one’s going to be a huge March break diversion for families, and I’ve heard from many parents with smaller children that they enjoyed it very much.
Definitely the little guys sitting in front of us, except for the falling off the booster seat part, seemed to be really into it, especially the dance party at the end.
I kind of questioned the Shakira casting though. I realize they probably got working on this years ago, but has Shakira been relevant at all in the past decade? I’d all but forgotten about her.

Great post! I did not expect to love Zootopia so much when I took my son to go see it. I think my husband and I liked it more than he did. It was amazing.

I just went to see this with my wife and kids yesterday. We loved it! You’re spot on about the message about the importance of avoiding fear-mongering politicians. Incidentally, the scene with the sloth (the one shown at the top of your post) was one of the funniest in the movie. Great stuff! 🙂

Thanks, I’m glad you liked it. It really won me over, both with its themes and with Flash the Sloth!
