Oppenheimer

What a sausage fest. They needed so many white men to fill all the roles of Oppenheimer that they scraped the bottom of the barrel and found…Josh Hartnett? From the 90s?

I mean, I’m sure it was beautifully shot and thought provoking and shit, but this is not really what I love about Christopher Nolan movies. I want to be challenged. I want my mind bent. I hardly need another unironic treatise on toxic masculinity told by the largest cast of cis white men ever assembled.

And I’m certain Ludwig Goransson provided a suitably cinematic score, but it clearly wasn’t emo enough for me, so I treated Sean to my own soundtrack of Machine Gun Kelly songs, as sung by me, my spotty memory, and my penchant for making up lyrics as needed.

I don’t even have anything bad to say about this movie. I just didn’t care that much. It wasn’t as interesting or as exciting as I’d hoped and frankly come to expect from Nolan. I would have spent these 3 hours better had I rewatched Tenet and I think we all know that’s really saying something.

Haha! Great review. I still haven’t caught up with the film yet. Of course, I’ve read a lot of good things and it’s certainly making a mark at the various awards ceremonies. I am intrigued…will definitely check it out when I get a chance.

I did enjoy Oppenheimer but it was bit of a slog to sit through. Your right though, although its been highly praised critically, its a film that more wordy than its actually worthy. The Oppenheimer. TV series from the 80’s by the BBC was a far better dramatisation of the life and times of the father of the atomic age. Highly recommend it if you can find it to watch. Great to see a post as well, been wondering how you were all doing.

I saw a lot of self-pity and guilt and remorse but mostly a big pity party the way Oppenheimer was portrayed and felt no sympathy for him or interest in anything they were doing. Some key element was missing to give it a soul, I think.

You’re right that there’s a definite element of character study with the guilt and remorse aspect, but mostly I felt the film lacked the courage of its convictions. Wasn’t really brave enough to have a point of view.

I enjoyed this one a lot, as I did Tenet. Nolan is one of my favorite directors of all-time, and to be sure these two movies are quite different in terms of actual action and “mind-bending.” I do get why he wanted to tell this story. Thought the acting was spot-on, even if Opp’s running time ran on a bit too long.
